Smudging is a way to energetically cleanse a space to invite positive energy. When smudging a space, you burn plant material. The smoke fills and purifies the environment. White Sage is probably the most common herb for smudging. It is associated with purity. White Sage has been used for a long, long time by indigenous people, medicine men/women, Shamans, Native Americans, and in Buddhism.

It is important that we keep our house, work/office space, and even our car also free of ‘negative’ energies, energies that are not for our highest good, so that the space we move around in is clean, and we can live, work and travel in the best energetic environment for us. Especially in these dark times, with the energy in the world feeling dense and heavy, it is important to keep our vibrations high. Smudging removes the energies that interfere with our well being and lower our vibrations, making the surrounding clean and optimal for us to live in.

White Sage is often burned in a fireproof dish, like an Abalone Shell, Clay Bowl, or a Cast Iron Incense Resin Bowl. White Sage can be bought in a bundle from spiritual shops or online. It is easiest to light the Sage with a lighter, but if you are clearing just one room, a candle is also often used. Mind that you will need to use a lighter or matchsticks to light the candle.

Before you start, you need to gather your materials. It is important not to rush this and do this with care. Before you start to sage you must ground yourself. You can find a grounding meditation exercise on our website. You want to be well-grounded as a protection for yourself. You need to allow enough time for the ritual, so you don’t feel rushed.

When moving around a room, you start in one corner, holding the shell with Sage in your hand, and with your other hand, you can wave the smoke around. You do this with the Intention to clear the room of negative energies. You move around the room-clearing every corner, repeating the intention of clearing the room of negative energies and allowing room for positive energies to enter.  Make sure you allow the smoke to drift into even the hidden spaces, like inside closets, basements, and dark corners. When going to the next room, you will open and close the door behind you upon leaving the room, then enter the next room by opening the door and closing it behind you. You carry out the same procedure in this room, wafting the sage in all corners of the room with the intention that you are clearing the space.  You move throughout your house in this way, clearing every room, not forgetting the stairways, corridors, and bathrooms/ toilets. When you have cleared the whole house, you can open the doors again.

When feeling heavy or low, you can also smudge your aura, but you need to be careful not to burn yourself or to spill burning Sage. You can hold the shell with the burning Sage in one hand and wave the smoke around yourself with the other hand.

It is recommended to smudge with Sage frequently at this time, at least a few times a week. As the energies are dark, dense, and heavy, we want to clear our living- and workspace and our car as often as we can, to maintain a clear, positive, and high vibrational surrounding so it is easy for us to keep our own vibrations high.
